A few years ago, I pulled out of my garage and started driving to work. About halfway there, I thought, “I don’t think I closed the garage.” Panic rushed in. I turned around and drove home quickly, only to find the garage already closed. In that moment, I realized I hadn’t been present. I was physically driving, but mentally already at work.
That experience taught me something important. Now, when I leave, I intentionally put the car in park, press the garage button, and actually watch the door close. I’ve done this for years. Because I’m present, I don’t have to worry anymore. My advice: notice where you’re not being mindful and gently change the behavior. Become present in small ways.
