A Chat With School Based Therapist, Samantha Pearlman, LMSW!

The pandemic has left a deep and lasting impact on children of all ages. A photo circulating recently shows just how much school life has changed for students, emotionally, socially, mentally, and physically.

School based therapist in St. LouisFor many kindergartners, first graders, and second graders, there has never really been a “normal” school experience. Even today’s eighth graders haven’t had a consistent school year since the end of elementary school. These disruptions have affected how children build friendships, manage emotions, and develop confidence.

Samantha Pearlman, LMSW, a school-based therapist in St. Louis, works with Youth in Need and supports students in both elementary and middle schools within the Parkway School District.

“The pandemic has significantly impacted children of all age groups. Younger students, like first graders, missed important socialization opportunities they would normally experience before COVID. This has been very disruptive emotionally and socially,” Samantha explains.

Samantha provides both individual and group therapy sessions. Her groups include mindfulness, leadership, and friendship programs, helping students improve communication, conflict resolution, emotional regulation, and social skills.

One of her favorite tools in therapy is something simple but powerful — games.

“Games might seem silly, but they create bonding, teach teamwork, and help kids practice problem-solving and conflict resolution in a safe, supportive way,” she says.

Through play-based therapy, children feel more comfortable opening up, building trust, and learning healthy coping strategies. This approach supports not only academic success but also emotional well-being.
